Note From the Editor
Proving once again that sometimes the simplest solutions are the best solutions, thanks to Ali Murphy of Argus Property Management for suggesting that we leave well enough alone with respect to the newsletter title.  SandScript it has been, and SandScript it shall remain. Congratulations to her and Argus for winning our little contest.  We continue to need your editorial suggestions and submissions.  Please submit them by e-mail to info@SiestaKeyChamber.com, or by phone to 941.349.3800.
Beach Renovation Plan

At the Chamber's August Board meeting, Jessica Ritter of the Sarasota County Parks Department provided a briefing on the renovation of Siesta Beach and Turtle Beach, as well as expansion of Beach Access 7.  Planned improvements for Turtle Beach include replacing fencing, construction of an ADA-approved boardwalk, increased parking and landscaping, a new picnic area, and an improved fishing dock and boat launch area.  Siesta Beach improvements will include replacing the Pavilion with an esplanade containing showers, benches, additional bike parking; as well as a landscaped retention pond, improved and increased landscaped parking, and replacement of the south concession stand containing a larger, shaded deck area.  She also reported that the acquisition by the County of two parcels adjoining Beach Access 7 allows for the possibility of increased parking there.  A public meeting is being planned for this Fall, after which a final plan will be developed.  Look for an additional presentation by Jessica at an upcoming Chamber luncheon.
Smith Receives AIA Silver Medal

photoChamber Board member and Siesta Key Village Association President Mark Smith is the recipient of the Florida Association of the American Institute of Architects' 2009 Hillard T. Smith Community Service Award (the "Silver Medal").  The award is given each year to an architect whose leadership in community activities and service has been a direct benefit to the architectural profession or the community.  Pictured above are (l-r) AIA Florida President Steve Jernigan, Smith and AIA Florida Immediate Past President Don Yoshino.  Well deserved, Mark!
Hurricane Season Returns

Keep abreast of the latest storm information and projections by visiting the National Hurricane Center's web site at
www.nhc.noaa.gov.  The site's "3-Day Cone" and "5-day Cone" forecasts for each storm are particularly useful.

Following a storm striking the Key Sarasota County Emergency Management will determine when the immediate danger has passed.  Afterward, but prior to the Key bridges being reopened to traffic, non-resident Siesta Key employees will be allowed re-entry to the Key by Sarasota County law enforcement if they have a photo ID and a letter from their employer on the employer's letterhead indicating that they are an employee.  It is recommended that such letters be provided to employees now.  For additional information, contact Sarasota County at 861-5000.
Sarasota County Advisory Council Vacancies
Are you an engaged, civic-minded person?  Do you like to be involved with topics like the environment, libraries and parks?  If so, consider joining one of Sarasota County's advisory boards.  It's a great way to provide advice to the Board of County Commissioners regarding these and many other issues, and for the Siesta Key business community to have its voice heard.  The County reports that, as a result of discontinuing newspaper advertising of the openings due to budget cuts, they are having difficulty filling the positions.  To view current Board openings, visit www.scgov.net/advisoryboards/Vacancies.asp.
Sailing Back to School; Area Businesses Give Back

photo
Key Sailing and G.WIZ have teamed up to offer deep discounts for Sarasota County school field trips, but U.S. Coast Guard Master Captain Tim Solomon is taking it one step further.  He and his wife Jan are actually raising the funds for the trips themselves.  "I fell in love with Jan and Sarasota at the same time, in 1973, and we graduated from Sarasota High School together.  We've been sailing together ever since, and I want to give back some of what was originally given to me as a teen at the Sailing Squadron on the weekends."

"Business leaders may give to the school of their choice, and even choose to accompany as a parent volunteer with their own children," Jan adds.  The trips have been approved by the school district.  Many schools have already signed up for these "first come, first serve" freebies.

For more information on donating or arranging for a cruise this school year, contact Capt. Tim Solomon at 941-720-8487, or e-mail to
walkonwater73@aol.com.
